How Does a Car Defroster Work?

The defrosters in car help to provide a clear vision when it is cold outside and warm inside the car. Whenever you feel like your car’s windshield is getting fog, a defroster car helps to clear the condensation.

However, it works completely differently for both rear and window.

In many vehicles, there is a feature that is the auto defroster, turn on the mode of defroster when the air conditioner is working itself. This aids to dehumidify the air indoors as the dry air clears the condensation from the inside of the windshield and the front side of the window. The manufacturer of the vehicle suggests turning off the air recirculation mode to increase the speed to defog.

Types of Car Defroster

There are 2 primary defrosters the one which is used to heat the vehicle heating, air conditions, ventilation the HVAC system for a warm blow. This one dehumidifier the air directly during the fog or iced-over. The other type is the one that defrosts the system and de-ices the mechanism. This one is usually known as resistive heating.

Types of Car Defroster

Primary Defrosters

The primary car defroster is the one that uses the vehicle’s own HVAC system. They are specifically designed to clear the front side of the window working on the 2 main principles.

The HVAC system itself activates the primary defroster to draw in the fresh air that passes through the heater’s core. In this way, it directs the warm air through the dashboard vents from the windshield and the side windows.

This system is also capable of defrosting the windows. The warm air holds moisture too like cold air that makes the working of the defroster more effective.

Secondary Defrosters

This car defroster does not use the HVAC system, they are useful to defog the windshield and the mirrors. They use wire grids and resistive heating to physically warm up the inner area like glass and it effectively melts the ice and removes condensation.

This portable car heater defroster uses the surface-mounted grid to defog the rear windshield. They are easily identifiable yet cannot be seen as the heated mirrors use internal wires to heat. The secondary defrosters use the basic mechanism through which the electrical current is applied.

Front Defroster

The front defroster is operated through the heating ventilation system. The defroster for the windshield blows the air through the ventilation system via vents at the forward edge.

Many car heater defrosters come with the setting through which the airflow from all directions is directed to the windshield. This allows the drivers a complete control to adjust the temperature manually.

Rear Defroster

This automobile defroster is powered and operated through the electricity dashboard switch. When it is turned on, it activates the wire grid which is visible in the form of thin wire within the glass that heats the rear window and defogs it.

Rear Defroster

Usually, the rear defrosters are operated through a timer that shuts down automatically after 10 minutes. Also, turning on the rear defroster activates the mirror heaters too. During the cold weather, the front defroster requires more time to work as it needs to warm the engine first.

How to defog a WIndshield without a Primary defroster?

In case your car does not have an automatic push-button for defrosting and defogging then, you have to do it manually. Here are the steps to do it yourself

Step 1: Turn on the ignition and the heater.

Step 2: Set the temperature of the heater to the highest.

Step 3: Change the HVAC circulation to draw air inside from the outer side.

Step 4: Turn on your air conditioner and open the window.

Following these simple steps can defog the mirrors without the primary defroster.
