Explain How Pumping Air Into A Bicycle?

Pumping air into your bicycle tires is a challenging task and you can do it yourself within less than 10 minutes. It demands very minimal energy but it can be a drag if you do not have the right tools for it. With appropriate tools, you can not only save your energy to take your bicycle to a mechanic but also it will save up your money. The tools required to pumping air into a bicycle include a pump (floor pumps and bike mount pumps), a Presta adaptor, and a pressure gauge.

How to Pump Air into your Bicycle?

Pumping air is easier but you must know which type of pump needs to be used. Both types have their own pros and cons.

Floor Pump: This is specifically designed for home-based usage and larger as compared to other bike pumps. Their larger size makes them less portable, and that is why they are specifically for home use. Floor pumps are easy to maneuver and take a very concise time to inflate your tire.

Bike Mount Pump: These pumps are portable (handy tool) and are smaller. This hand air pump takes longer to fill up your bike’s tires.

Note: The type of air pump depends on the type of tire valves.

Types Of Tires’ Valves

There are three types of tires’ valves including Schrader valves, Presta valves, and Wood valves- all types require a specific type of pump.

Shrader Valve

This is also known as the American valve– a pneumatic tire valve that can be used on almost every vehicle’s motor. The valve comprises a valve stem which is further threaded with a valve core (it is a poppet valve that comes with a spring). The core comes with a small rubber seal and prevents the fluid from moving out through the threads. If you use an appropriate tool, even a faulty valve core can be removed and exchanged with a new one instantly.

Presta Valve

It is also known as the French valve (FV) or Sclaverand valve (SV)- used to fix the inner tubes of some mountain bicycle. It is most commonly used in high-pressure off-road bikes. This valve comes with an outer valve stem possessing an inner valve body. It may also have a lock nut that offers safety to the wheel rim. Likewise, it may have a valve cap.

Wood Valve

These valves are also termed Dunlop valve or English valve- a pneumatic valve stem type. It mostly is used on the inside of tubes of legacy bicycles. It comes with a broader base as compared to the Presta valve and has almost similar in size to the Schrader valve. The inbuilt system of the valve can be changed easily without using any special tools.

Presta Adaptor

A Presta adaptor is basically a cap that can plug onto the Schrader valve. The origination of use is needed when inflating at a gas station. This works contrary to traditional bicycle pumps, that accommodate Presta valves. The method is to screw the adaptor and inflate it using the pumps at the gas station. The Presta adaptor is small and sometimes kindle to find at the time when it is needed.

Pressure Gauge

The pressure gauge is extremely helpful in keeping the track of how much air level is reached. During the air pumping procedure, it is best to configure and keep the status of air in mind—the gauge lets you take an account of how much air is pumped and how much more needs to be in.

What is recommended Tire Pressure?

How to Pump Air into a Bicycle Tire?

If you are using a any type of valves for pumping air into a bicycle, you have to follow the following simple steps.

Step—1

Unscrew the rubber cap by gently turning the cap of the valve in the clockwise direction. Loosen up the cap and when it comes out, put it in a secure place as you have to put it back after pumping the tire.

Step—2

Check the optimal pressure (the recommended range) of your bike’s tire. While pumping air, beware you do not pump excessive air than required.

Step—3

Check the type of pump required and get it ready to proceed with the process. Make sure a wrong pump can cause damage.

Step—4

Now pump the air into your bike’s tire and make sure the nozzle is in the right position and the lever is properly clamped.
