2023’s Most Family-Friendly Cars

Last updated on April 24th, 2023 at 08:40 pm

The best new cars for families were ranked by US News & World Report on Tuesday. Nine 2023 vehicles from nine different categories stood out among the other 92 models that were evaluated.

Whether you prefer a roomy SUV or a fuel-efficient hybrid, US News has you covered. What does US News consider to be a great family vehicle? Interior space, general quality, and family-friendly features all need to receive high marks.

Only passenger and cargo rooms are available. Reviews of the vehicles, data on vehicle safety, and reliability rankings all factor into the overall quality.

In-car WiFi, automatic emergency braking, hands-free cargo hatches (for opening the trunk with an armful of groceries), and Parental controls for new drivers are examples of family-focused features that raise a vehicle’s score.

The following are some Examples

Winner: Kia Carnival

  • Price: $34,465 to $47.50 (all prices include destination charge)
  • The range for the estimated combined fuel economy: is 22 mpg
  • Seven or eight seats are available.

When it comes to transporting children, parents typically have a few tricks up their sleeves.

The 2023 Kia Carnival, however, adds a few more much-needed comfort and convenience goodies that make parenting easier.

The minivan stands out for its blend of capable handling, lots of safety equipment, and attention to value.

The updated version of Kia’s Sedona minivan will go on sale for the model year 2022 with just one powertrain: a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with 290 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

This engine is punchy and responsive even when carrying a lot of cargo and passengers.

The mid-level SX trim now comes with more standard and optional technological and safety features for 2023.

The Carnival’s smart interior elements won over the editorial team’s parents. The middle seat in the second row is more adaptable thanks to the Slide-Flex seating system;

it can slide forward to make it easier for the front passenger to reach a child in the middle seat. Additionally, there is a rear-passenger-view camera that enables first-row passengers

to monitor the children in the back using an in-cabin camera system.

A dual-screen entertainment system is also available, and it offers wireless screen mirroring for Apple and Android devices.

Even though it may seem like the Carnival is all about having fun, it takes safety, value, and cargo space very seriously.

We don’t anticipate the changes for 2023 to have an impact on the excellent crashworthiness scores for the 2022 Carnival from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or its high grades in our Car Seat Check.

In our own testing, we found that the Carnival had more cargo space than competing minivans and three-row SUVs.

Even in this family-friendly market, the Carnival offers extras that other minivans don’t, thanks to its impressive array of standard active safety features.

One favorite is the optional blind spot monitor, which, once the turn signal is activated, shows a view of the adjacent lane in the driver’s instrument panel.

Another is the rear-seat alert system, which monitors movement in the second and third rows after the doors have been locked and sounds the horn, and turns on the hazard lamps if movement is detected.

Finally, the Carnival is a good deal because it is less expensive than its rivals but offers more features. The van won our Best Family Car of 2023 award

thanks to its combination of utility, features, and affordability.

Kia Telluride

  • Price: $37,255 to $44,350
  • Range of predicted combined fuel efficiency: 21–23 mpg
  • Seven or eight seats are available.

Family automobiles tend to be monotonous, am I right? But not this one. The editor-parents on our staff found a lot to appreciate about the 2023 Kia Telluride despite the fact that it is anything but.

With its generous interior space, competitive luggage capacity, long list of kid-approved creature comforts, and parent-approved driving manners, the family-hauling SUV appeals to both adults and children.

The Telluride was introduced for the 2020 model year and has seven or eight seats spread across three rows.

Recent model-year updates have given it a new look and given it new off-road-oriented X-Line and X-Pro variants for 2023,

keeping it competitive in a burgeoning class of family-oriented three-row SUVs.

The only available drivetrain combines a front- or all-wheel-drive capable 3.8-liter V-6 engine with an eight-speed automated transmission to produce 291 horsepower.

The Telluride is stable and composed for comfortable long-distance driving, and its 5,500-pound maximum towing capacity could be helpful if you need to transport more toys.

The 2023 Telluride takes it all home, and it does it with an eye on value, from generous cargo space to lots of passenger comfort, easy car-seat insertion, and a focus on family-friendly features.

Subaru Outback

  • Price: $29,620 to $43,520
  • Range of predicted combined fuel efficiency: 23–28 mpg
  • Five chairs total.

The 2023 Subaru Outback is a partner for life’s adventures for families with a little bit of a wild side.

It has space for a smaller family and a special combination of excellent off-roadability, comfortable on-road performance, and top safety ratings.

Subaru’s already remarkable EyeSight safety system receives a minor aesthetic update, enhanced multimedia, and extra functionality for the model year 2023.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded EyeSight high safety ratings based on its performance and crashworthiness ratings.

Once more, it offers two engine options: a base 182-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a 260-hp, turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder, both of which pair with continuously variable automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

The turbo adds a little extra power while maintaining the smoothness and capability of both engines. There is also the Wilderness trim, which shines when you leave the roadway and is designed for off-road use.

The enormous vertically oriented touchscreen for controls and multimedia in the Outback has been updated.

With its responsive screen and simple, customizable menus, which now include often-used amenities like heated seats easily accessible from the home page, it’s a highlight of the cabin for 2023.

Even grownups will have plenty of room in the spacious backseat of the Outback for two car seats.

The roomy cargo area behind the seats has enough for all the equipment needed for an expedition, even the filthy stuff (shout out to the Outback’s optional all-weather floormats).

The Outback provides for families that like to venture off the usual path, earning it a spot on our shortlist for Best Family Vehicle of 2023.
